Research and education; alfalfa and forage managment; sustainable cropping systems; director of sustainable agriculture graduate program.Ph.D.: Maryland (1977) Year Appointed: 1977 Rank: Professor Primary Responsibilities: Research and education; alfalfa and forage management; sustainable cropping systems; director of sustainable agriculture graduate program. Research Interests: My responsibilities involve research, teaching, and administration of a graudate program. My research is on use of annual and perennial legumes in sustainable cropping and forage systems. In additional to the development of agronomic information on legumes, we also conduct studies on the morphology and physiology of important species. Our program was the first to investigate use of kura clover, annual medics, and annual alfalfa as forage legumes in the Midwest and use of alfalfa varieties for biofuel. I feel that research is improved through team approaches; therefore, much of my research is cooperative with other faculty and graduate students. I greatly enjoy interaction with students and teach several classes. These include an introductory agronomy class, Principles of Agronomy; an advanced crop management class, Principles of Crop Management; as well as a graduate class, Issues in Sustaninable Agriculture. I have had a unique opportunity to work with a team involving faculty, students, and non-profit organizations in developing a new Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture. The project was funded by MISA and provides graduate students an opportunity to greatly broaden their graduate experiences through course offerings and an internship program.
