Vance, Carroll P. (USDA-ARS), Ph.D.

- Adjunct Professor
Research; physiology and molecular biology of N fixation in legumes and plant response to phosphorus P stress; Research Leader USDA/ARS.

Ph.D.: Ohio State (1971)
Year Appointed: 1976
Rank: Adjunct Professor (Research Leader, Research Plant Physiologist)
Primary Responsibilities: Research; physiology and molecular biology of N fixation in legumes.

Research Interests:
-Functional genomics of nitrogen and phosphorus acquisition in legumes
-Molecular modification of plant carbon and nitrogen metabolism
-New uses for alfalfa in sustainable agriculture

Current or Planned Experiments:
-Characterization of plant genes involved in nitrogen and phosphorus acquisition.
-Use of RNAi technology to modify plant metabolism.
-Use of transgenic technology to develop alfalfa genotypes for biomass and bioremediation.
-Assess the role of organic acids and nonphotosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation in improving plant phosphorous metabolism.
-Develop alfalfa genotypes for use in ground water quality improvement.
