Ph.D.: Minnesota (1995)
Year Appointed: 1995
Rank: Assistant Professor and Extension Agronomist
Primary Responsibilities: Outreach, research and teaching; small grains production and management

Research Interests: Dr. Jochum Wiersma has been the small grains specialist for the University of Minnesota since April 3, 1995. Based at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center in Crookston, Wiersma works with producers, extension personnel and spring wheat leaders to develop educational programs and address small grains related production issues. Research, on-farm trials, and technology such as the Internet are key tools used by Wiersma in helping Minnesota farmers manage wheat and barley production challenges. Wiersma also teaches an introductory course in plant breeding at the University of Minnesota Crookston.

Wiersma received his Ph.D. in plant breeding from the University of Minnesota in 1995. At the U of M, Wiersma served as a research assistant in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics. He was involved with the U of M wheat breeding and genetics project, and assisted in lab, greenhouse, and field research of the wheat breeding project lead by Dr. R.H. Busch.

Wiersma completed his undergraduate work in plant breeding at the Agricultural University of Wageningen, The Netherlands, in 1991. While attending the University of Wageningen, Wiersma was part of a team which developed strategies for streamlining pesticide storage and distribution operations at a private farmers cooperative. He also was involved with the Foundation for Plant Breeding Research in Wageningen.

An early highlight of Dr. Wiersma's career was serving as an intern at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), El Batan, Mexico. The Center is known for a program to develop superior germplasm that can be used worldwide to improve yield and quality of bread wheat.

A native of the Netherlands, Wiersma has a farm background that includes working with his father in managing a potato breeding program.
