| The origin of the department traces back to the 1880s when the first experiments with field crops were initiated at the University of Minnesota. The current departmental structure was established in 1928 as the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics within what is now the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Now, as in previous years, the department strives to improve the lives of citizens of the state and world through contemporary education programs for undergraduate and graduate students and other learner groups, and through progressive and innovative research encompassing the full range of basic and applied crop sciences.
