Biography
Dr. Yesuf Assen Mohammed (he/his) holds a B.Sc. from Alemaya University (Ethiopia), an M.Sc. from Ghent University (Belgium), and a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University (USA). He began his career as a Postdoctoral Researcher and later became a Research Scientist at Montana State University, where his work focused on emerging crops and cropping systems. Dr. Mohammed then joined the USDA-ARS in Morris, Minnesota, where he focused on integrating winter camelina and pennycress as cash cover crops in the corn-soybean rotation. He is now a Research Agronomist specializing in winter oilseeds in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at the University of Minnesota. His research seeks to develop practical and effective agronomic management strategies for integrating winter camelina and pennycress into existing cropping systems to enhance productivity, profitability and sustainability. Winter camelina and pennycress not only offer raw materials for biofuels and bio-products but also provide key ecosystem services, including reducing soil erosion, minimizing nutrient leaching and supporting pollinator populations, among others.
