Update on the Integrated Plant Systems Undergraduate Research Experience

2023 IPS URE group members

Fourteen undergraduate students from diverse programs of study across the U.S. participated in the 2023 Integrated Plant Systems - Undergraduate Research Experience, May 17 to August 2.

Students conducted research on diverse topics ranging from genotypic characterization of pennycress with novel traits to grain processing using hydrothermal liquefaction, a promising method for bio-crude production. Students worked with researchers at institutions throughout the Upper Midwest, including the University of Minnesota. In addition to developing research skills, students acquire interdisciplinary competencies needed for collaborative work on bio-based solutions to food, energy and environmental challenges.

This internship program is an educational component of the Integrated Pennycress Research Enabling Farm and Energy Resilience project funded by Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grant No. 2019-69012-29851 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Application to next year’s IPS URE program begins November 1, 2024.
